Sinds de eerste publicatie in 1954 volgden de herdrukken elkaar in snel tempo op. Ik las de trilogie voor de eerste keer in 1977. Ik besloot toen reeds, als ik ooit een zoon zou hebben, dat zijn naam 'Frodo' zou worden... Dat gebeurde dan ook in 1991. Op zijn identiteitskaart staat sinds 34 jaar 'Frodo'.
De liefde voor dit indrukwekkend boek heeft me nooit meer los gelaten. Met moeite kan ik weerstaan aan een of andere nieuw of 2e hands mooie verzorgde uitgave. Hieronder de gevolgen...

Reeds in 1991 (10 jaar vòòr de Tolkien-'revival' ) bracht "Tudor Mint U.K." een eenmalige 'Limited Edition' uit van figuren uit het boek 'The Lord Of The Rings'. Het zijn beeldjes uit een preciese legering van tin en zilver. Elk beeldje heeft zijn eigen Swarovski kristal. Deze waren enkel te koop in Engeland. Heel toevallig zag ik ze pronken in een etalage toen ik in Canterbury was. Deze unieke stukken hadden slechts een beperkte oplage.
Already in 1991 (10 years befòre the Tolkien 'revival') "Tudor Mint U.K." released a one-off 'Limited Edition' of figures from the book 'The Lord Of The Rings'. They are figurines made of a precise alloy of tin and silver. Each figurine has its own Swarovski crystal. These were only for sale in England. Quite by chance I saw them on display in a shop window when I was in Canterbury. These unique pieces had only a limited edition.

In 2001 verfilmde Peter Jackson 'The Lord Of The Rings'.
Hilarisch feit: Er zijn 'fans' die dachten dat de films eerst werden gemaakt, en pas nadien in boekvorm verschenen. Het boek verscheen reeds in 1954. Peter Jackson verfimde de trilogie. Hij maakte ook 'The Hobbit' naar het boek uit 1937 en maakte van het boek van amper 266 pagina's, een trilogie van totaal... 7 uur. Elke lezer 'van het eerste uur' van het boek stelt zich er vragen over.... Gandalf zou hier zijn grijze wenkbrauwen toch eens bedenkelijk fronsen.
De boeken die opnieuw werden uitgegeven tijdens de Tolkien 'revival-hype', hebben het niet meer al te nauw genomen met de oorspronkelijke vertaling uit de jaren '70 .
Het sfeervol archaïsch taalgebruik werd vervangen door een moderne koelere taal.
Max Schuchard probeerde destijds- bij de eerste vertalingen in de jaren '60 - zo dicht mogelijk bij de stijl te komen. Hij correspondeerde voortdurend met Tolkien voor vertaal-advies omtrent begrippen, namen, zinnen en interpretaties. Tolkien wilde dat de lezer in het Nederlands precies hetzelfde zou lezen, zien en beleven zoals hij het in het Engels bedoelde. Wie die oorspronkelijke sfeer wil moet ofwel een Engelse versie, of een vroegere nederlandse uitgave zien te vinden van vòòr 2001.
Tolkien wilde nooit dat zijn werk zou worden verfilmd. Zijn zoon Christopher (derde en jongste zoon van Tolkien) zei 'dat het boek van zijn vader "verwoest" was en dat het "een actiefilm was geworden voor 15- tot 25-jarigen". ' (cit. LeMonde) Christopher hekelde de commercialisering van de boeken, die de "esthetische en filosofische impact van zijn creatie hebben vernietigd".

Gandalf would raise his gray eyebrows in doubt.
The books (Dutch version) that were republished during the Tolkien 'revival hype', no longer took the original translation from the 70's too seriously. The atmospheric archaïc language was replaced by a modern cooler language. Translator Max Schuchard tried - with the first translations in the 60s - to come as close as possible to the original style. He constantly corresponded with Tolkien for translation advice on concepts, names, sentences and interpretations. Tolkien wanted the reader to read, see and experience exactly the same in Dutch as he meant it in English. Anyone who wants that original atmosphere must either find an English version or an earlier Dutch edition from before 2001.
Tolkien never wanted his work to be made into a film. His son Christopher (Tolkien's third and youngest son) said 'that his father's book had been "ruined" and that it had become "an action movie for 15- to 25-year-olds". ' (cit. LeMonde) Christopher criticized the commercialization of the books, which "destroyed the aesthetic and philosophical impact of his creation".
